Bonaire Celebrates Earth Day with Cleanup and Recycling Activities Above and Below the Water

As a result of Bonaire’s longstanding commitment to preserving and protecting the land, there will be several cleanup and recycling activities around the island from April 10 through April 24, in honor of Earth Day (April 22, 2010).

The first event will be an underwater cleanup of Kralendijk’s anchorage, sponsored by Dive Friends Bonaire and NetTech.  This cleanup will take place at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Dive Friends @ Dive Inn facility, where participants will be briefed on what sort of trash should be removed from the underwater environment.  A BBQ for all participants will follow in the late afternoon.  Tanks, weights, and belts, along with main courses and beverages at the BBQ will be provided courtesy of the event sponsors.  Everyone is welcome to help--divers, snorkelers, and those who wish to provide shore support.  For more information, click here.

Then, on Saturday, April 24, the Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) organize a land cleanup of the beach at Washikemba.  This location on the island’s east coast is windward, meaning that trash from other locations in the Caribbean and South America will often wash up on the beach.  Interested participants will meet at 7:00 AM at Jong Bonaire.  Bus transportation will be provided for those without vehicles, leaving at 7:15 AM from Jong Bonaire.  Be sure to bring gloves, closed shoes, sun screen, a cap or hat, and a beverage container (water and juice will be provided by STCB).  Prior participant registration is not necessary.  For more information, contact STCB at 717-2225.

On Friday, April 23, the island’s waste management company, Selibon, N.V., and the Keep Bonaire Clean Foundation (Fundashon Tene Boneiru Limpi) will host a conference at the Divi Flamingo Beach Resort & Casino from 1:30 to 5:00 PM, entitled “Re-use the Past, Recycle the Present, and Save the Future,” in honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.  With the laudable goal of creating awareness of individual responsibility to conserve and take care of our planet, the two organizations will present information on what actions can be taken locally on Bonaire to contribute to the conservation of the entire planet.  There will also be a brainstorming session to which community leaders will be invited to present and gather new ideas on how Bonaire’s environment can continue to be protected and preserved in both the short-term and long-term.  During the conference, a display will be available highlighting companies and organizations which offer environmentally responsible products.  Attendance is free, and those wishing to attend may register by emailing fundashonteneboneirulimpi@gmail.com.

To engage the young of Bonaire in recycling efforts, both Selibon and the Keep Bonaire Clean Foundation have plans to hold a recycling fair with a contest for the island’s children and teenagers, in the hope that such activities will stimulate them with ideas and plans to preserve the planet.

Simultaneously, these two organizations also will be launching “Shop With A Bag.” The objective of this campaign is to urge local residents to continue to bring a re-usable shopping bag when grocery shopping.  Such a practice will help eliminate the need for the importation of plastic bags, in turn, keeping the island clean of refuse made by the empty bags.  During this campaign, all local residents will receive a free, re-usable shopping bag.

For additional information on any of these programs offered by Selibon and the Keep Bonaire Clean Foundations, contact fundashonteneboneirulimpi@gmail.com.

Bonaire will also take part in the worldwide “Earth Hour,” an initiative of the World Wildlife Fund, when millions of people, thousands of cities, and globally famous monuments all will switch off their lights for just one hour in a symbolic show of support for our one and only planet.  This will take place on March 27 at 8.30 PM local time, no matter where one lives.  Earth Hour began in Australia in 2007, and, since then, the symbolic support of our planet has spread to over 120 countries, including all seven continents, even including Antarctica.  All those on Bonaire are invited to join the Tourist Corporation Bonaire and STINAPA in turning off the lights for only one hour this Saturday, March 27, 2010.  (Source:  TCB-NY)

InfoBonaire.com, the Bonaire Information Site, Expands Site with New Data

NetTech, N.V. is pleased to announce the expansion of the popular InfoBonaire web site, the Bonaire Information Site, with new destination information for Bonaire visitors to assist with planning their vacations.

InfoBonaire®, the Bonaire Information Site™, was launched in 1997, and over the last 13 years has become well known as the definitive source for information about Bonaire as a destination, offering information about accommodations, restaurants, rental vehicles, diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, and more.  As new services become available on the island, InfoBonaire.com keeps the site fresh and timely with daily updates.

Accordingly, several new topics have been added to InfoBonaire’s wide scope of data.  Many visitors plan their vacations to Bonaire for diving, snorkeling, or windsurfing activities, but there’s a plethora of other activities to enjoy, too.  Visitors may now learn more about horseback-riding by visiting www.infobonaire.com/horsebackriding.html, or kiteboarding, by visiting www.infobonaire.com/kiteboarding.html.  Either of these activities offer exciting options for the traveler or family and friends.

Shopping is always a necessity while on vacation, whether it’s to purchase one’s own souvenirs or for those back home.  Visiting www.infobonaire.com/souvenirs.html offers a glimpse at special options for gift-giving, highlighting souvenirs which are made only with products from Bonaire or are about the island itself.  The Art and Handicrafts page, located at www.infobonaire.com/art_handicrafts.html, focuses upon where fine art and other local handicrafts can be found around the island, either for purchase or viewing, as artwork always provides a way to remember a favorite site or moment of a vacation.  And for those who want to be sure they’re in the height of fashion, even while on the beach, the Surf-wear Shopping page at www.infobonaire.com/surfwear.html offers a variety of options and tips.

As nearly all stay-over visitors utilize Bonaire’s airport, the new Airport page informs about the various services available at the island’s Flamingo Airport.  Visit www.infobonaire.com/airport.html for additional information.

Those not arriving by air usually enter for a day in port while on a cruise to the southern Caribbean, and the new Cruise Passenger Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page will answer many questions for those island visitors who must maximize their enjoyment of what Bonaire has to offer.  This page can be viewed by clicking www.infobonaire.com/cruise_FAQs.html.

Nearly all stay-over visitors rent a vehicle so they are mobile and can enjoy dining at different restaurants , visiting various dive or snorkel sites, or traveling through the island’s northern national park.  Although driving on Bonaire is very easy, the new Traffic page at www.infobonaire.com/traffic.html provides information about signage and right-of-way for those driving.

Since the invasive Pacific lionfish entered Bonaire’s waters, many visiting divers want to know what they can do to help with containment.  These divers can visit the new Lionfish page located at www.infobonaire.com/lionfish.html for more information and tips about this new species.

Viewers may easily access any of these new sections of InfoBonaire directly from menus on the home page and other key parts of the InfoBonaire web site.

“When we first launched InfoBonaire over a dozen years ago, our premise was simple—provide all possible information about Bonaire in a simple, friendly manner, and continually update the site to keep it current. Our efforts obviously have been rewarded because InfoBonaire has been, and remains, the top Bonaire web site in Google and many other key search engines,” said Jake Richter, founder and co-managing director of NetTech N.V.  He added, “This latest expansion continues our effort at keeping our content current, fresh, and most importantly, relevant, focusing on the real information visitors need.”

InfoBonaire is also the host of One-Stop Quotes™, which allows potential Bonaire visitors to easily check rates and availability for select accommodations and car rental companies with one simple online request, which is then transmitted automatically via an email to those local companies which the viewer selected.  Since its inception in 2006, One -Stop-Quotes has provided thousands of quotations and availability checks.  For additional information or to request a quote, visit www.infobonaire.com/one-stop-quotes.html.

NetTech N.V. is Bonaire’s largest and most well known Internet hosting and email company providing all levels of Internet marketing, design, specialized programming, and graphic services.  The company provides the popular web sites InfoBonaire (www.InfoBonaire.com), The Bonaire Insider™ (www.BonaireInsider.com), Bonaire Surveys™ (www.BonaireSurveys.com), and Paradise Rebates™ (www.ParadiseRebates.com). For additional information, visit www.nettech.an.

Paradise Moon Celebrates First Anniversary, Throws St. Patty’s Day Party

It’s been a year since restaurateurs Pam and Carl Perpich moved from their prior location in Kralendijk (Papaya Moon Cantina) to their new location at the Harbour Village Marina.  Their new restaurant, Paradise Moon, celebrates its birthday on March 17th, which just happens to be St. Patrick’s Day, also!

Paradise Moon is a great restaurant for any occasion, serving up scrumptious dinners for two, for a larger group, or even a party.  They have a large menu with assorted appetizers, main courses including steak, tender ribs, pastas, and salads, and award winning desserts, all made in-house.  Sone of their recent add-ons is a great snack bar menu and draft Heineken beer.

And since their anniversary just happens to fall on St. Patrick’s Day, they are throwing a “Get Irish” party.  With their festive bar, some great Irish stew, draft or bottle beer and lots of Jameson, the party will get started with their Happy Hour (5:00 through 6:30 PM).  Their normal full menu will also be available.  The fun will continue into the evening hours while everyone becomes a little Irish for the night!  Be sure to wear green!
