Dia di Rincon (Rincon Day) Offers Music, Culture, Food and Fun

Today, April 30th, is traditionally known throughout the Dutch Kingdom as the Queen’s Birthday, and it is a legal holiday, but here on Bonaire, there’s cause for another type of celebration, Dia di Rincon (Rincon Day), now in its 21st year.

Beginning around 11:00 AM and going until midnight, residents and those visitors lucky enough to be on island will rub elbows together in the streets of Rincon, enjoying the music and cultural dancing on six stages, as well as food and drink stalls, handicrafts, and a total immersion in all things Bonaire.  It’s a once-a-year festival that no one will want to miss.  To view the agenda for today and tomorrow’s festivities, click here (in Papiamentu and PDF format). Massage Hut Bonaire Offers New Services and Products With Bonaire Salt

The Massage Hut Bonaire at Sorobon Beach has partnered with A Place for You and is now creating and selling natural sea salt products from Bonaire.  Sea salt, also called Maris Lumis or Maris Sal, from Bonaire is know for its cleansing, detoxifying, and healing qualities.

Bonaire sea salt contains nearly 100 different minerals and other healing substances, including potassium, magnesium, and bromide. Bonaire salt evaporates from the seabeds and contains minerals used in baths to soften the water and draw impurities from the body.  These sea salts can provide relief from stress and anxiety, assist with muscle and joint pains, and treat the symptoms of more severe skin conditions. The therapeutic benefits of sea salt baths are well known and often recommended by doctors for treating a wide range of medical conditions.

The Massage Hut is now offering bath salt, body scrubs, and natural sea salt. The bath salt and body scrubs contain essential oils and come in four different scents. The bath salt is excellent for muscle relaxation, detoxification, and healing of the skin. The body scrub is a great product for ex-foliation and detoxification, and easy to use in the shower.  The natural sea salt is used for cooking as well as the above mentioned benefits.  These salt products are sold at The Massage Hut at Bonaire Windsurf Place, Lac Bay, and at several other locations around the island. More information is available at the Massage Hut’s web site by clicking here.

When next visiting the island, why not try a new, uniquely Bonairean experience:  A natural sea salt body scrub at The Massage Hut while listening to the sounds of the sea. Choices include a complete body scrub ($35.00), a foot and leg scrub ($15.00), or a hand scrub ($10.00).  For true luxury, add a scrub after your massage.  These new salt products and services are the perfect complement to the massages already offered at The Massage Hut for many years by Ann Johnson, a Certified Massage Therapist. Bonaire’s Richter Art Gallery Holds First Open House

The Richter Art Gallery announced today that it will be holding its first “Open House” on Saturday, April 24, 2010, to introduce Bonaire’s art lovers to its newly remodeled space.  The Open House will take place from 2:00 PM until 7:00 PM on April 24th and, in addition to a range of fine art, will feature wine and snacks for those visiting.

The Richter Art Gallery, located in Belnem, is owned and operated by local Bonaire artists, Linda Richter and Jake Richter and is located on the second floor of a specially constructed extension built onto their home.

The gallery features a variety of fine art and unique works, all created by the Richters. Linda Richter specializes in fine oil painting and has developed a special style she refers to as “Nature Portraits.” Linda has won numerous awards and accolades for her representations of the bright, colorful world around all of us. Linda has both original oil paintings as well as limited edition prints of her works for sale at the Richter Art Gallery.

Jake Richter’s experience as a nature photographer and journalist has been applied to digital media using a process he describes as “digital painting”, where he uses his photos as a starting point to create images which stir the imagination and soul. Limited edition prints of Jake’s works are also available at the gallery.

For those familiar with the works of the Richters, there will be a number of new recently created works on exhibition as well.

The Richter Art Gallery is open regularly Tuesday through Fridays, from 2:00pm until 5:30pm, and at other times by prearranged appointment. To make an appointment to visit the Richter Art Gallery, one only needs to call or e-mail. The gallery’s phone number is +599-7 17-4112 and e-mail address is info@RichterArt.com.

The Richter Art Gallery is located at Kaya R. Statius van Eps 17 (also known as the “Road to Sorobon”), in the Belnem area of Bonaire. More information about the Richter Art Gallery can also be found by clicking here (Source:  Richter Art Gallery)

Bonaire’s Underwater Cleanup Removes Much Trash from Kralendijk’s Yacht Anchorage

On Saturday, April 10, 2010, Bonaire experienced some cloudy skies, but that did not keep an enthusiastic group of divers and snorkelers from cleaning up the shallows of Bonaire’s Cha-Cha-Cha Beach.  All worked together as a team to remove trash from this area.  Images from this cleanup are available on-line at the Bonaire Insider Photo Gallery by clicking here.

Jake Richter of NetTech addressed the group and explained what trash should be recovered and what should be left behind, as well as how to keep from damaging any marine animals.  Shortly afterward, the divers entered the water, descended, and began to fill their bags with trash.  When filled, the bags were brought to the surface to those working as shore support.  There, Dive Friends crew and volunteers checked once again to be sure no marine creatures had been inadvertently included, counted, and tallied the trash for statistics, and then disposed of it responsibly.

It had been a year since this stretch of shallows was last cleaned, and the group was able to process an impressive amount of trash that had accumulated during this time:  25 beverage cans, bottles, 9 cup lids, 2 pieces of clothing, 15 pieces of mono-filament fishing line, 5 eating utensils, 8 pieces of plastic and rope, 2 automotive tires, as well as miscellaneous building materials, boat parts, and chemical light sticks.

After the dive, all participants and their families were welcomed back for a Pot Luck BBQ—Dive Friends Bonaire and NetTech, the sponsors of the Bonaire cleanups, provided drinks and main courses, while participants supplied side dishes.  All participants were rewarded with certificates of participation.

The next quarterly underwater cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, July 10, 2010.  Additional information about the cleanups is available by clicking here.  All are welcome to join in.  (Source:  Dive Friends Bonaire and NetTech)
