Spinning and Body Balance Come to Bonaire’s Bon Bida Spa and Gym

What better way to burn off the excesses of this weekend’s Karnival celebrations than to begin Monday morning with an energizing spinning class?  Bon Bida Spa and Gym is adding new dimensions to their already impressive line of fitness classes.

At 6:00 AM on Monday morning, March 7th, Bonaire’s cycling guru, Miguel Angel Brito, will kick-off the first spinning class at Bon Bida Spa & Gym.  Afterward, a full schedule of spinning classes will be available by Miguel and other instructors.  Spinning is a group class conducted on a stationary spinning bike and set to music which simulates the various challenges of bike riding, and it is a vigorous aerobic workout which burns calories and keeps your muscles in shape.  The instructor will guide participants through a series of phases, from warm-up to more challenging phases, to a period of peak effort followed by a cool down. The intensity of the workout is influenced by your pedal rate, the resistance of the bike’s flywheel, and by the rider’s body position, as you either pedal from a seated position or rise from the saddle.  Each Monday, Miguel will have a class from 6:00 to 7:00 AM and Tina Woodley will guide a class from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Tuesday’s class will be taught by Tina from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. On Wednesdays, Annemieke will lead class from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. On Fridays, there are two more choices with Tina from 9:00 to 10:00 AM or with Miguel from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Weekend classes are also offered on Saturdays with Tina and Sundays with Annemieke, both from 9:00 to 10:00 AM.

And Miguel will also introduce a new class called Balance Your Body each Thursday from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.  This class is a combination of yoga, pilates, and tai chi. Participants of all levels are welcome and may choose their level of challenge from beginning to advanced.

For those who would like to participate, the classes are included in the gym’s membership price at no additional charge. For those who would just like to attend one or two classes each week without having access to the full gym facilities, that can also be arranged.  Bon Bida offers several levels of membership, including a day pass for those visitors who would like to attend.  For additional information, phone 717-7224 or email by clicking here. Go Green’s Next Farmer’s Market Will Take Place This Saturday, February 26, 2011

In December, 2010, the Go Green Natural and Organic Shop began organizing monthly Farmers’ Markets, bringing together at one location all vendors who sell home-grown or home-made products from Bonaire.  This month’s Farmers’ Market will take place on Saturday, February 26, 2011.

The market will be held just behind the Go Green shop, and in front of the Catholic church in Kralendijk.  It will open at 8:00 AM and run through 2:00 PM, but it’s recommended to get there early for the best selection.  The market in January was much larger than than the initial market in December, and this market is promising to be just as fun.

Those visiting will find locally grown produce and food items, as well as plants and herbs and spices.  It’s a great way to rub elbows with the locals and spend an hour browsing the stalls.  (Source:  Go Green Natural & Organic Shop)

The Bonaire Banded Box Jelly Named to the Journal for Zoolological Taxonomists (ZooTaxa)

The Bonaire banded box jelly, now named Tamoya ohboya, has been officially listed this January 2011 by ZooTaxa, a mega-journal for zoological taxonomy in the world. Scientific studies of this new species of Cubozoan jellyfish began in 2001 after additional sightings were reported on Bonaire.

The first sighting of the jelly was captured on video and showed a single, strong-swimming cuboid shaped jellyfish that had four banded tentacles, and was identified as a box jellyfish of the class Cubozoa. It was covered in nematocyst warts and had a deep stomach. The tentacle binding pattern was distinct with dark brown to reddish-orange banded tentacles, which is unusual in the class Cubozoa, indicating that a new species may have been discovered.

Since that time, 50 sightings have been recorded in the Caribbean Basin, with most sightings occurring in Bonaire, and additional sightings in St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Cozumel, Mexico and Utila, Honduras. Three specimens have been collected, with the first one being on the surface of the water off Klein Bonaire, and are currently being stored at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. Furthermore, there are three recorded contacts with humans and evidence indicates that the sting is serious. The species is related to two other species; one found in Brazil and the other in the southeastern part of the United States. (Source: ZooTaxa)

Bonaire International Airport Announces Extended Schedule (through July) for Planned Closures

As reported in an earlier story last week, Bonaire International Airport (Flamingo Airport) has announced that beginning today, February 13, 2011, there will be times when the airport is closed due to runway renovations.  The airport has just announced the extended schedule from March 28, 2011 through July, 2011.

To view the entire schedule of closings that have been announced to date, click here (in PDF format).  The first page provides the schedule for now through March 27, while the second page provides the schedule from March 28 through July.  For the most parts, it’s regional flights from Curacao or Aruba that are impacted, and those with flights coming in with connections from those islands should check with their airline to be sure their flights are still operating as scheduled.  Please note “LT” stands for “local time on Bonaire” while “UCT” stands for Universal Coordinated Time, the same as GMT, Greenwich Mean Time.
