12th Annual Jong Bonaire Swim To Klein Bonaire Scheduled for October 7, 2012

Once again, Jong Bonaire is organizing the ever growing, ever popular, Swim to Klein Bonaire, which this year will be held on Sunday, October 7th, 2012 to once again kick-off Regatta Week.

This sport and social event brings together families and individuals of all ages, with tourists swimming next to local residents, all to support the children of Jong Bonaire.  Last year, more than 350 people swam to Klein Bonaire and most of them swam back as well.  It’s hoped that the 2012 event will once again break the record for participants.

The Swim to Klein Bonaire is not a race, but a fun swim. For those who do not wish to swim back, there are many boats available to pick up people and return them back to the shoreline. Participants can use fins, masks, or even flotation devices.

Tickets can be obtained beginning September 10th, 2012 at several locations around Bonaire, including Jong Bonaire, Bon Fysio/Bon Bida Spa & Gym, and De Freewieler, or simply purchase a ticket on the day of the swim.  Those who wish to save time in the early morning of the swim should purchase their ticket in advance, but all participants must be on the beach by 7:00 AM.  Pre-registration is also available on October 6th at Jong Bonaire from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.  Cost is $15.00 per adult, and $10.00 per child, and includes an event t-shirt, lunch, and a drink.

For additional information, telephone Jong Bonaire at 717-4304).  (Source:  Jong Bonaire)

The Wounded Warriors are Honored by Lt. Governor Emerencia

Last evening, at a reception hosted by Bonaire’s Lt. Governor, the Honorable Lydia Emerencia, nine U.S. military men, who were seriously injured in service to their country, were honored as Bonaire Ambassadors.  View images of this event on the Bonaire Insider Photo Gallery by clicking here.

After transport from their resort with a motorcycle escort by the Iron Order Motorcyle Club, the men, their families, and those escorting them, arrived at the island’s seat of government, the Bestuurscollege.  There, everyone met Mrs. Emerencia along with representatives of Bonaire’s tourism board, then relaxed to enjoy a wonderful evening.

First, the men were called up to the podium, one by one, and given certificates of recognition by Mrs. Emerencia.  Then, they were bestowed with medals signaling their membership in the elite Bonaire Ambassadors, those visitors who have shown an overwhelming loyalty to Bonaire.

The reception ended with a typical Bonairean cultural show presented by one of the island’s local dance troupes, before the Wounded Warriors were once again swept away to their evening’s dinner.

The group’s fast-paced week will be ending soon.  It is with great fondness that the island will have to say ayo on Saturday, as the Warriors return to their every-day lives back in the United States.  But this week will never be forgotten.  It has been a great time to learn a new skill, forging ahead with activities that they can continue for the rest of their lives, in the company of their loved ones.  We wish them all well, and say, “Come back soon.” (Source:  Bonaire Insider Reporter)

Renovations Are Complete on Spelonk Lighthouse, Dutch State Secretary Joop Atsma Will Officiate

As part of the ongoing process to renovate five of Bonaire’s historic and working lighthouses or light beacons (see previous stories by clicking here and also here), the lighthouse at Spelonk is now wearing a new coat of paint and is back at work, keeping mariners aware of Bonaire’s eastern coastline.

Dutch State Secretary (Infrastructure and Environment), Joop Atsma, is currently on a visit to the Dutch Caribbean islands of Bonaire, Saba, and St. Eustatius.  While visiting Bonaire, he will officially re-open the renovated lighthouse at Boca Spelonk by handing the key to the local government of Bonaire, symbolically returning the responsibility for the managment and maintenance of the lighthouse to the local governmental level.  (Source:  Bonaire Insider Reporter, Amigoe)

The 2012 Wounded Warriors are Certified, Continue to Dive Daily

As in past years, The Bonaire Insider is closely following the exploits of this year’s contingent of Wounded Warriors, nine men who have been seriously injured during their service in the U.S. military.  The men, along with their significant others or family, arrived on Saturday and have been actively diving since then.  View images of the group as they prepare for diving on the Bonaire Insider Photo Gallery by clicking here.

The group arrived tired, but happy.  The immediately jumped into the water and completed their certification dives on Saturday and Sunday.  Since then, they are diving daily, both from the dock at Captain Don’s Habitat, their host hotel, as well as from boats at many of Bonaire’s well known “Klein” dive sites.  Even with life-changing injuries, these men have wonderful water skills, excellent buoyancy, and are completely at home in the water.

Today, while the men head off for more boat dives, some of the ladies are trying out their skills with windsurfing at Bonaire’s Lac Bay.  Tonight, they will head to Spice Beach Club for a beach BBQ.

Tomorrow evening, the men, their families, and traveling companions will be honored at a reception by Bonaire’s Lt. Governor, The Honorable Lydia Emerencia.  We’ll touch bases again with the Wounded Warriors to see how they are enjoying their whirlwind week of diving, sightseeing, and dining on Bonaire.  See you underwater!

Hr.Ms. Tromp Readies her Gangway for an Open House on Bonaire

Since June, the Hr.Ms. Tromp has been acting as the station ship in the Dutch Caribbean for the Navy and Coast Guard.  This advanced naval ship, an air defense and command frigate, will be lowering her gangway on Thursday, August 23rd, 2012 in Kralendijk’s port, to allow the people and visitors of Bonaire to come and view the ship.

From 2:00 to 5:00 PM that day, everyone can take advantage of the unique opportunity to visit the ship.  In addition to providing maritime support, the main task of the station ship is also to provide drug interdiction.  Due to this dual duty, the Hr.Ms. Tromp is used by both the Royal Navy and the Coast Guard Caribbean. The Tromp also sails part of the western term for the Coast Guard, and, during that period, the ship performs tasks such as customs, environmental and fisheries monitoring, and handling of maritime distress alerts. Finally, the ship and its crew are deployed to provide assistance in the event of humanitarian disasters.

The total of four air defense and command frigates (LCF) are very advanced ships of the Royal Navy. The frigates have a command function, that is they have the technical capabilities on board to help guide comprehensive maritime operations. The frigates are also equipped for air defense, forming a squadron of ships to provide defense to those in the Dutch realm. The most striking feature of the LCFs is the use of stealth techniques, giving them a tight and angular appearance. Thanks to the advanced automation, the ship sails with a crew of 202, including the staff.

Hr.Ms. Tromp will be docked at Bonaire’s main pier in Kralendijk on August 23rd, 2012, and Naval Captain Rene Tas, commander of the ship, and his crew welcome everyone aboard. (Source:  RCN)
