Weekend Events on Bonaire Run the Gamut of Food, Markets, Festivals, and Fun Events

This weekend provides myriad opportunities to enjoy the wide variety of events and activities that Bonaire offers.  Enjoy barbecues, an eco-festival and farmers’ market, the Special Olympics Walk-a-Thon, an artisan’s exhibit in Rincon, or an open house with beach volleyball at Krusada.

Start the weekend off right by attending Kriabon’s monthly farmers’ market on Saturday morning where locally produced items are available for sale.  Fruits, vegetables, herbs, and decorative plants are available, and also some wonderful products such as locally produced Bonairean honey, fresh muffins, juices, and jams/chutneys.

From Kriabon, head on over to Unbelievable Restaurant from 12:00 Noon through 2:00 PM to enjoy a special lunch plate.  Choose from fried fish, goat stew (served with rice or funchi and salad/fried plantains) or a mixed grill of chicken, ribs, rice, and salad.  All lunches are only $10.00 per plate.  Reserve by calling 717-3000 or 786-9059 or 528-8218.

Sunday will be a busy day with early risers joining in on the annual Special Olympics Walk-a-Thon.  Take part or cheer on those walking, running, or cycling for this worthy cause.

Then, head over to the Beach Hut at Sorobon where BICEPS Bonaire will be hosting an Eco-Fest from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.  This is an excellent opportunity meet with a variety of Bonaire’s foundations to discuss their missions and goals, as well as learn how you can help.  These eco-friendly associations will be showcasing their skills in working with the environment to find sustainable ways to make a living, as well as providing a product or service.  After 4:00 PM, music and fun will be the order of the day.

Then head out to Rincon, where a new museum is highlighting local artists as well as an exhibit of traditional Bonairean musical instruments, on the first Sunday of every month.  The exhibit of handmade arts and crafts is at the Sentro Chich’i Tan, located at Kaya Milon #4 in Rincon.  It’s recommended to call before visiting to ensure open hours:  717-3183 or 785-7842

But even then, there’s still another stop to make, this time at Foundation Krusada on the road to Lagun.  Krusada is celebrating 12-1/2 years of active work on Bonaire, providing rehabilitation to those who require assistance to beat substance abuse problems.  The facility will host an open house with tours (guided tour in Dutch at 3:15, and guided tours in English and Papiamentu at 3:30 PM), “local taste” and children’s activity from 2:30 through 4:00 PM, and then a beach volleyball tournament from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.  Please note that Krusada is a smoke- and alcohol-free environment.

Enjoy the weekend!  (Source:  Bonaire Insider Reporter)

AB CarRentals Focuses Upon Increased Customer Service With New Facilities

AB CarRentals, which, with over 200 vehicles, offers visiting tourists one of the largest fleet of vehicles on Bonaire, has been busy upgrading its fleet, facilities, and customer service options.  Now, customers of AB Car can enjoy a variety of new conveniences when renting a vehicle.

Their new, dedicated facility on Kaya Industria is just minutes from the airport, and it’s also convenient to Kralendijk or major resorts for those who might wish to pick up a vehicle for just a few days, instead of their entire visit.  The facility includes an air-conditioned reception area for check-in and check-out and free taxi and luggage service to and from the airport, making arrivals and departures less stressful.

But AB Car’s “no stress” policy goes one step further.  For those who purchase the full insurance with their vehicle, one of the new benefits includes a Zero Deductible.  This means that no matter what might happen to the car in the way of theft, accident, or vandalism, there is no responsibility to the renter.  This makes diving and snorkeling at some of Bonaire’s more remote dive sites truly worry-free.  And, their 24/7 free road assistance, with the purchase of full insurance coverage, means that if there is a problem with the vehicle, AB Car will be there to assist.

AB Car has always been a leader in keeping Bonaire as “green” as possible, importing the first truly electric car a few years ago.  That mindset has been carried forward to this day, as their garage facility is truly exceptional in that car wash water is recycled and the garage itself is held to Dutch/EU standards which mandate that floors must be sealed, so oil cannot leak into the environment.  Used motor oil is stored in a large tank, and then emptied four times a year via Bonaire’s recycling company, and the garage itself is nearly noise-free with plenty of lighting.  All in all, the visitor’s overall experience is pleasant and efficient.  Kudos go to AB Car for being pro-active in keeping their environmental “footprint” as small as possible.

What’s even nicer is that those renting pickups in the “Group Two” category are guaranteed a vehicle that is not older than 18 months.  The pickups in this category--double-cabin pickup trucks deluxe, with 4 doors/5 seats, air-conditioning, radio/CD player, power-steering, fabric seats, separated front-seats, manual transmission--are replaced regularly.

For more information or to check with AB Car on availability, visit their web site by clicking here.  Those who wish a dive pickup truck and plan on purchasing the full insurance coverage can save 10% on their rental by downloading and printing the coupon at Paradise Rebates by clicking here(Source:  AB Car)

Sea Urchins--How Does An Animal Without Eyes See the Light, by CIEE

The CIEE Research Station Bonaire will hold its next public presentation on Wednesday, February 20th, 2013 to explain this perplexing riddle:  How can an animal without eyes see the light?

This presentation will be given by Dr. E. Arboleda.  Sea urchins belong to an ancient lineage of animals that have been widely studied over the history of marine science. It has been known since the times of Aristotle how they respond to moonlight to synchronize their reproductive seasons. It has been also known that sea urchins have an active response to light (either avoiding it or going toward it ,depending on the species), but it has always been a matter of debate how can these animals sense the light surrounding them.  Thanks to modern science and the use of genetic and molecular biology tools, we have been able to decipher this long standing question. During Dr. Arboleda’s presentation, it will become clear about the methods used to study light sensation (known as photoreception) in sea urchins, and why these sea urchins are now considered “walking eyes,” able to sense light from any direction even during their juvenile forms.

The presentation will be begin promptly at 7:00 PM, and entry is free and all are welcome.  It’s recommended to arrive a bit early, as recent presentations have been full.  The presentation will be held at the CIEE headquarters at Kaya Gobernador N. Debrot 26 in Kralendijk.  (Source:  CIEE)

Live Vicariously, See Bonaire’s Grand Karnival Parade

Today everyone was in Kralendijk for the Grand Karnival Parade.  Those battling cold and snow can live vicariously be viewing images of today’s parade on the Bonaire Insider Photo Gallery by clicking here.

The adults were just as energetic as the youth of Bonaire in last week’s parade, and today saw a variety of floats and dancers, including a very popular lionfish group, a group of “bakers,” and a wonderful show of horsemanship and dressage at the end.  Costumes were brilliant and sparkled in Bonaire’s sun and blue skies.  Smiles were everywhere, as those in the parade enjoyed themselves, and everyone watching did the same.

Tuesday evening will be the final time to catch the parade, if it was missed today, as the Karnival time will end with the traditional burning of King Momo at midnight on Tuesday.  See you there!  (Source:  Bonaire Insider Reporter)
