The Taste of Bonaire is Saturday, August 31st, 2013

This weekend, the island can enjoy the third “Taste of Bonaire” in 2013, when everyone will converge on the parking area in front of the Government House on Saturday, August 31st, 2013.

From 6:00 to 10:00 PM, visitors and residents alike can wander through the stalls and enjoy food prepared by local restaurants and snacks, as well as arts and crafts which are available for puchase.  Musical groups and folkloric dancers will perform, and Bonaire’s top models will be presented, fresh from the Miss & Mister Intercontinental 2013 competition in the Dominican Republic.  Dishes start at only $3.00 per plate, so it’s a great way to sample a variety of foods while strolling through stands.  (Source:  Extra)

The Wounded Warriors are Honored by Bonaire

In a festive affair this past Wednesday evening, our visiting Wounded Warriors were honored at a reception held in the garden of Bonaire’s Government House, hosted by Lt. Governor Lydia Emerencia.  Along with a motorcycle escort, the men, partners, and accompanying instructors, arrived with fanfare.  View images of the reception on the Bonaire Insider Photo Gallery at http://bonaire.me/Ze3c.

During the reception, Lt. Governor Emerencia and Director of Tourism, Ethsel Pieternella, welcomed the men to Bonaire, and added their sincere thanks for all that these men have sacrificed for their country.  Then, each warrior was called forward and was honored as an Bonaire Ambassador, receiving medals, certificates, and pins.  What the island can give these men is so little when compared to what they have given.

But there’s an amazing story behind how this week occurs each year, as 2013 marks the eighth consecutive year that Bonaire has hosted these extraordinary military personnel--and this story crosses borders, cultures, industries, and languages!  These men and their traveling companions are given “carte blanche” on Bonaire, because of the collective generosity of so many people from so many countries and walks of life.

The cooperation begins back in the United States with veteran’s associations that cover the transportation plus other incidentals, to the dive manufacturers that have donated their wetsuits, diver gear and gadgets, to the international online community of BonaireTalk.com, which provides the conduit for individuals to make donations which cover meals and extras for the warriors, to the private sector on Bonaire which provides services so generously and is so indicative of Bonaire’s hospitality.

Each year, the list of sponsors becomes longer, allowing the warriors to do more, sample different cuisine, shop, and sightsee.  Special thanks go to major sponsors:  Adams Unlimited Public Relations & Marketing, Bonaire Tours & Vacations, Captain Don’s Habitat, Caradonna Dive Adventures, DEMA/Be A Diver, Disabled Sports USA, Dive Training Magazine, Henderson Wetsuits, HSA International Training Center of New Jersey, Jack Chalk, Jewel of Bonaire, NetTech NV, Oceanic, Rum Runners Restaurant, Tourism Corporation Bonaire, and Wounded Warriors Project.

Others who have donated funds or services include Bistro de Paris, Bonaire KFC, Bonaire Quad Tours, Bonaire Guided Motorcycle Tours, BonPhoto, Budget Rent A Car, Captain Don Steward and Janet Thibault, Chat ‘n’ Browse, CIEE, Divers Alert Network, Destination Weddings & Honeymoons Magazine, Dive News Wire, Elements, Enchanted Florist, Femme Fatales Women Motorcycle Club, Innovative Scuba, Iron Order Motorcycle Club, Island Magazine, Joe’s Grill House, Maspeth Lions Club, PADI, Paradise Moon Bar & Restaurant, Princeton Tec, Scuba Diving Magazine, Sport Diver Magazine, and Scuba Toys.

There are simply so many who open their hearts and wallets to help these men and their families realize that, even with the serious injuries and disabilities that they must live with for the rest of their lives, they can still live and enjoy all the small joys of life that many of us take for granted.  No matter what a person’s politics, no one can deny what these men have sacrificed.  Bonaire wants to say a sincere Thank You!

Tomorrow morning this year’s contingent of Wounded Warriors will once again return to their homes across the United States.  We say te aworo, until next time!  (Source:  Bonaire Insider Reporter)

The 2013 Contingent of Wounded Warriors Are Basking in Bonaire’s Sunshine

This group of U.S. military men, their partners, and instructors are definitely basking in Bonaire’s sunshine.  That is, when they are not underwater!  As reported earlier, the 2013 contingent of Wounded Warriors are taking on Bonaire and loving every minute of it!  View images of their annual dock-side photo shoot at http://bonaire.me/Zef5.

After arriving on different flights from various U.S. gateways on Saturday, there wasn’t a minute of their precious Bonaire time to waste.  “Big Wave” Dave and Stuart got these guys and their partners into the water for immediate immersion.  During their time here, they will complete their PADI Open Water Certifications, as well as receive HSA (Handicapped Scuba Association) certification as well.  All of these men have suffered life-changing injuries during their deployments while serving in the U.S. military.  But each one has adapted so well to their changed circumstances, and all one saw yesterday, as they enjoyed their annual photo shoot, was smiles in abundance.  There was some playful kidding, and one wheel-chair-bound Warrior even “mooned” the camera, albeit with his wet suit on.

One Warrior spoke openly about his injuries and the subsequent battle to recover and adjust.  He stated that after his deployment to Iraq, where he suffered critical injuries, he returned to the States for a recovery period and rehabilitation.  He admitted that the two-year period upon his return home was the darkest and most difficult time of his life.  Adjusting back to life at home while trying to recover from injuries was not easy.  But the bright spot which brought him through it was when he got in touch with an organization for wounded military personnel who suggested he try the SCUBA sports rehab program.  The Wounded Warriors Project sponsors a variety of sport programs to help show wounded vets that they can still enjoy a regular lifestyle, even with their lives changed forever, and in the words of this particular vet, “Learning to SCUBA dive saved my life.”

Another Warrior had to bounce in and out of Tuesday’s photo shoot, because his wife had gone into labor a month early!  So instead of being on hand to witness the birth of his child, through the wonders of the Internet, he (along with a fair number of his buddies!) witnessed his child’s birth on a tablet!  He popped in for a picture or two, but he was (understandably) rather focused on the birth of his child and his wife’s health.  We’re happy to report both mom and daughter are doing well!

The annual Wounded Warriors program on Bonaire, which brings down vets such as these, is an important marker in their recoveries.  Many are able to bring along family members, wives, or girlfriends, and they quickly learn that they can continue to enjoy life.  It’s touching to hear that these wounded vets are having their times of their lives on little Bonaire, so much so that they all vow to return again soon.

Tonight, the Warriors will visit with Bonaire’s Lt. Governor, The Honorable Lydia Emerencia, when she hosts a reception in their honor.  The Bonaire Insider will continue to follow these remarkable men and their families for the balance of the week.  (Source:  Bonaire Insider Reporter, images by Susan Davis)

Bonaire Welcomes U.S. Military Veterans as the Wounded Warriors Return to the Island

Since 2005, the entire island community has welcomed a group of “Wounded Warriors” to the island every year. Later this month, 12 members of the U.S. military who have sustained severe injuries will travel to Bonaire for scuba diving for rehabilitation and recreation.

From August 17-24, 2013, the wounded soldiers and their significant others will be on island to complete the final steps in obtaining their dive certifications. Representatives of the Diving Equipment & Marketing Association’s (DEMA’s) Be A Diver Program, the North American office of Tourism Corporation Bonaire and the Handicapped Scuba Association (HSA) of New Jersey will also be on-site.  All accommodations and diving will be provided courtesy of Captain Don’s Habitat Bonaire.  Each year, the people of Bonaire warmly welcome this group and show them not only the natural beauty and pristine waters of the island, but also the friendliness and genuine hospitality of the Bonairean people.

This year’s contingent of twelve wounded warriors has suffered life-changing physical injuries received in combat while stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. They and their partners will be kept busy with a variety of activities, kicking the week off with the completion of their PADI and HSA dive certifications. Once certified, they will continue diving throughout the week, both from the dock of Captain Don’s Habitat and via boat dives to Klein Bonaire and other famous Bonaire dive sites. The group will also enjoy sightseeing, shopping, dining, and an authentic Texas-style BBQ. The highlight of the week will take place when the Bonaire community gathers to meet these extraordinary troops and their companions at a reception held in their honor with Bonaire’s first female Lt. Governor, the Honorable Lydia Emerencia.

Bonaire’s Student Chefs are Back and Hosted Italian Students in Turn

The wonderful opportunities that several of Bonaire’s student chefs enjoyed this summer have been “paid forward” as the island has been hosting a group of Italian exchange students in turn.

As The Bonaire Insider reported earlier, a lucky group of Bonaire’s student chefs spent weeks in Italy this summer fine-tuning their culinary skills.  They returned to Bonaire just weeks ago and are now excited to start sharing those new-found skills with those on Bonaire, both visitors and residents.

But a true exchange program means that several Italian students came back and each was assigned to work as an intern with one of Bonaire’s participating restaurants to get hands-on experience.

Sara Matera, well known in the Bonaire culinary scene for years now, was Bonaire’s roving reporter providing updates of this great intern-exchange program.  (Source:  Culinary School Web Site)

2013 Edition of Bonaire Heineken Jazz Festival a Resounding Success

This past weekend it was difficult to find somewhere on Bonaire without the “sound of music,” as the 2013 edition of the Bonaire Heineken Jazz Festival played out Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings.  Images of the event can be viewed on the Bonaire Insider Photo Gallery at http://bonaire.me/Zcf3.

The festival began on Friday night with the traditional opening of jazz and poetry in the intimate ambiance of Fort Oranje.  Those wishing could be within feet of the performers for a more enjoyable presentation.  The evening opened with local artist Andreina and her jazz ensemble, and as always, they provided an energetic start to the event.

Next, the festival welcomed back Nina from Slovenia, along with her musicians, who are now performing some of the most sought-after jazz in Europe.  Nina sings jazz and blues effortlessly, and her own joy in singing is evident in her performances.

Friday’s opening with closed with pop artist Levi Silvanie, originally from Curacao, but now performing in Holland, along with his percussion and guitar accompanists.

Saturday night was the main event, with an impressive stage set up on the beach at Plaza Resort Bonaire.  Nina was welcomed back and opened the evening, followed by famous Dutch performer, Trijntje Oosterhuis, and followed by salsa band, Porfi Baloa i Sus Adolecentes.  By the end, it was really rocking and rolling with a massive turnout on the beach.

Sunday’s performance began with a mellow jam session, also on the beach, followed by a performance by Dutch singer/songwriter, Miss Montreal.  Kudos go to the Bonaire Jazz Foundation for providing Bonaire’s residents and visitors with a memorable event this year!  (Source:  Bonaire Insider Reporter, images courtesy of Rolando Marin and Susan Davis)
