Enjoy Special Events on Bonaire this Week!

There’s a variety of special events coming up this week for those lucky enough to be on Bonaire to enjoy them.  These events run the gamut from cultural and nature-oriented events, to just some good ol’ fun and fitness.

On November 20th and 21st, 2013 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, CIEE’s current roster of 14 students will each provide a short presentation on their work while on Bonaire.  Each student will present their work in the form of a 12-minute talk. On both nights, the event will be held at the CIEE Research Station (Kaya Gobernador N Debrot #26, Kralendijk).

On the morning of November 21st, 2013, from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM, STINAPA will celebrate their “Festival di Planta Palu” (or Festival of Tree Planting) at the entrance to Washington Park.  Students from local schools will plant 100 trees.  Come and celebrate with the local kids as they learn how important nature is to Bonaire.

It’s the time of year for Sanikolas to make another appearance, and he should be arriving on Saturday at about 3:00 PM in Wilhelmina Park.  Legend says he arrives by boat from Spain, where he checks to be sure if little girls and boys have been good or bad!  There will be a variety of activities in Wilhelmina Park, so be sure to stop by and enjoy the festivities.

Also on Saturday, November 23rd, the last Fun Race of 2013 will be held.  Meet at Te Amo Beach, across from the airport at 4:00 PM.  The Fun Race will be two laps of the race, while the Elite Race will be three laps.  Entry is $10.00 per person, and includes water, a sports drink, and fruit.

Finally, on Sunday, November 24th, 2013, CIEE will be hosting another Family Nature Fair.  The event will be hosted by their hard-working students and will take place between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM in Wilhelmina Park.  There will be fun games, activities, food, and a story hour with Captain Don! All activities are geared towards teaching kids about Bonaire’s environment, and what each person can do to help.

As one can see, the week is filled with activities.  Be sure to get out and enjoy at least one or two of these unique experiences.  (Source:  Bonaire Insider Reporter)

Den Laman Condominiums Contract New Management Team for the Bonaire Oceanfront Resort

The Den Laman Condominiums Homeowners Association recently announced it has awarded the hotel management contract to Debby Rauwers and Marco Vermeulen.

Debby Rauwers grew up on Bonaire, where in 1980 her family built and operated Buddy Dive Resort. Debby was intricately involved in the operation of the resort prior to leaving for her studies at the Higher Hotel Management School in Maastricht, Netherlands. Upon completion of her studies, she returned to Bonaire and Buddy Dive, where she worked “on the floor” before working her way up to General Manager and eventually director of Buddy Dive Resort. During her tenure, Debby was responsible for introducing Buddy Dive, known only to European divers, to the U.S. market.  Within a three year period the resort achieved a 70% US-market demographic, and reached its peak occupancy before being sold to in 2002. After the sale, Debby became an independent entrepreneur and founded Management Connexions, a full service corporate meeting and event management company in the Netherlands. During that period, she also conducted sales activities for Harbour Village Beach Resort Bonaire.

Marco Vermeulen has had broad experience in the travel industry. After graduating from the MTRO school for tourism and leisure in the Netherlands, he became the co-owner of a travel service company specializing in international luxury travel.  After selling the company, Marco worked in the staffing industry where he set up a number of offices as director, both in the Netherlands and Poland. IN 2005, Marco returned to the travel industry as the owner of a Travel and Incentive Bureau for companies before joining Debby in 2008 as the co-manager of Management Connexions.

Debby and Marco have also jointly owned and operated La Pura Vista, a small, elegant boutique hotel on Bonaire.

“We conducted an extensive search before selecting Debby and Marco as our new management team” said Peter Gutman, President of the Den Laman Homeowners Association. “The guests who come to stay at our Bonaire ocean front complex are looking for the special attention you can only get with a small property, and we knew, based on their collective experience, that Debby and Marco were the team who could offer that, and take Den Laman to an even higher level of customer satisfaction. Den Laman has historically achieved a high level of customer satisfaction with its guests.”

“We plan to look for even more ways to enhance their stay, so that each and every guest will have the best vacation experience possible,” said Marco Vermeulen.

Den Laman features a total of 15 fully air-conditioned units including Studios, Ocean View and Ocean Front One and Two Bedroom apartments, and one truly unique Seaside Deluxe Two Bedroom unit.  All have private balconies, high-end kitchens, dining area, living areas with LCD-TV with surround sound system, DVD player and free Wi-Fi. Den Laman’s Drive & Dive Bonaire Packages include everything guests need to enjoy the best of Bonaire by including condo, air-conditioned pickup truck, options for shore or boat diving and free Nitrox upgrades. Whether guests prefer diving or snorkeling, or simply relaxing and visiting with family and friends, Den Laman is the ideal dive resort and vacation property for those who value their creature comforts as much as they appreciate instant access to adventure and exploration.

For additional information, call toll free (North America):  1-800-382-1094, or in Florida: 1-954-453-5050, visit their web site at www.denlaman.com, or email by clicking here(Source:  Den Laman Condominiums)

Try out Bonaire’s Latest New Restaurants Offering a Variety of Cuisine

There’s lots of new, exciting options for those visitors who like to dine out when on Bonaire, and a whole array of tempting new restaurants and eateries have opened just in time for the high season.

Ingridients has opened at Buddy Dive Resort.  Named after owner, Ingrid van der Valk, this top-notch restaurant offers a menu based on Mediterranean cuisine and uses the basic principles of French, Spanish, and Italian cuisine.  The menu choices feature “bites”, soups and salads, tarte flambee (a very thin crust pizza topped with lardons, onions, and fromage blanc), pizzas, pastas, meats, seafood, and, of course, desserts!  Open Friday to Tuesday, 6:00 PM until 10:00 PM.  Telephone 717-1684 for reservations.

Retro Pizza on Kaya Grandi in Kralendijk, just opened its doors just a few days ago, and is offering dine-in or take-away pizzas.  With names such as the Bob Marley Pizza, and other old-time favorites, it’s a great place to stop in town for pizza.  The restaurant is located just across from Wilhelmina Park.  Telephone 782-0256.

Just next to Wilhelmina Park, and across from Retro Pizza, Cuba Compagnie Bonaire is also a new spot in which to dine or enjoy a drink while watching the people pass by.  With tables on the street, or inside, Cuba Compagnie is fast becoming a spot where the local residents gather, and visitors are enjoying trying it out too.  Call for reservations, 717-1821.

Further away from town, visitors will enjoy Bonaire’s latest Italian restaurant, Sonia Home, located just north of the Hato traffic rotary, and it’s open Monday to Saturday, 6:00 to 10:00 PM, but the bar opens at 5:00 PM.  Telephone:  717-1758.

For those enjoy a more distinctive Latin beat, try out Chef Isabel, located at Kaya Emerenciana #2.  This is a 100% Colombian bar and restaurant, where one can dance as well as dine or enjoy some drinks.  Telephone 717-7270.

And it’s sad to report, but at the end of November, and after many, many fine years of service to Bonaire’s visitors, City Cafe will close.  They are going out with a bang, however, so those who are visiting this month can enjoy a full menu of events, great dining and drinks, while watching the sun set into Kralendijk Bay.  Thank you City Cafe!

Debris Free Bonaire Volunteers Move Mountains of Marine Plastic Debris

When Dive Friends Bonaire started Debris Free Bonaire in December 2012, they had no idea what a success it was going to be.  As of October 27th, 2013, Debris Free Bonaire volunteers have collectively removed over 100 cubic meters (3,531 cubic feet) of marine plastic debris and it continues to pour in.  Since its inception, tourists and locals have enthusiastically embraced Debris Free Bonaire.  The program was designed to provide volunteers, both visitors to Bonaire as well as island residents, the opportunity to assist with costal cleanups on their own time. The project’s success has proven to be far beyond anyone’s expectations.

Although the western coastline of Bonaire is mostly pristine, the eastern coastline is where a large volume of plastic debris washes ashore from other regional locations or islands, with more arriving every hour of every day.  “Clean beaches are critical to the reproduction and survival of our endangered sea turtles,” says Dr. Sue Willis of Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire.  Raising awareness on the island is not difficult, as many of Bonaire’s visitors are avid scuba divers and they have a vested interest in keeping the marine environment clean.  These same visitors also have a greater understanding of the detrimental effect of plastic debris.

Anyone who wishes to volunteer can visit any Dive Friends Bonaire location to pick up a few mesh gear bags and then collect debris from the east coast at their convenience.  Then, they can return the bags to a 10 cubic meter collection container at Dive Friends Bonaire @ Hamlet Oasis.  The container provides a visual reminder of the volume of trash that is collected little by little, one volunteer at a time.  Volunteers can also pose for photos in front of the debris container to be posted on the Debris Free Bonaire website and Facebook.  They can also enter a raffle drawing with the opportunity to win prizes such as a week of unlimited shore diving.  Once full, the plastic debris is sorted for recycling and proper disposal.

Island residents Scott and Sally Simons drop off several bags of debris per week and have incorporated into their dive routine a visit to the east coast to collect plastic.  When asked why, they enthusiastically responded, “We want to help make Bonaire beautiful for all to see and enjoy. We hope to encourage more people to pitch in with a bit of their time...what a difference it does make. We love Bonaire, and it’s our small way of giving back!”

Sponsoring businesses include:  Addo’s Bookstore, Beachcomber Villas, Bon Photo, BON Travel, Bonaire Automation, Bonaire Scuba Services, Bonaire Shore Diving Made Easy, Bonaire Travel, Boto Blanku, Coco Palm Garden, East Coast Boat Diving, Green Planet Maps, Kryioyo Paint, InfoBonaire.com, Suunto, Rocargo, Bonaire Seaside Apartments, Sign Sudio and Van Epps Kunneman Van Doorne, Bocar, Body Glove, Brandaris, Budget Car Rental, Cressi, Deep Blue Gear, Djambo, Hamlet Oasis, Harbortown Real Estate, Mares, Van Dijk Soliana Bonapart & Aardenburg III, Playa Trading, Scubapro, and Sherwood Scuba.
