Upcoming Lunar Eclipse is Visible From Bonaire

There will be a total lunar eclipse on April 15th, 2014.  This eclipse will be visible in totality from Bonaire and the surrounding region.

The partial phase of the eclipse will begin at 01:58 AM and end at 05:33 AM. Totality will occur on Bonaire at 03:07 AM and end at 04:24 AM, with greatest eclipse occurring at 03:46 AM.

Bonaire’s normally clear skies should hopefully provide a great opportunity to view this infrequent lunar event.  It also provides a unique opportunity for those who enjoy photography to capture something unusual.  A total lunar eclipse occurs when the entire moon passes through the Earth’s umbral shadow. During the total phase (totality), the moon turns a vibrant red color. These are easy to see as well, with the unaided eye.

A lunar eclipse begins as a small notch slowly appears along one edge of the moon. During the next hour, the moon gradually dips deeper into Earth’s dark umbral shadow. If the eclipse is a total one, the last remaining minutes of the partial phases can be quite dramatic. The crescent of the moon grows thinner as darkness propagates through a night sky now deprived of moonlight. If you’re away from the lights of town, the Milky Way can become bright and beautiful as the total phase begins.

No matter what kind of camera you own, there are a variety of techniques that you can use to photograph a lunar eclipse: wide-angle, telephoto, multiple exposure and star trail. Nikon’s “Mr. Eclipse,” Fred Espenak, offers a variety of tips for photographing eclipses.  For those using Nikon camera systems, view his tips for the upcoming lunar eclipse by clicking here, or visit his web site for more general tips by clicking here(Source:  Meteo and Nikon)

Improvements in Washington Slagbaai National Park

STINAPA rangers are currently making improvements in the facilities of Washington Slagbaai National Park by placing benches in designated areas for bird watching and relaxation.

The park rangers are building new wooden benches to be placed all over the park so that there are more areas for the visitors to stop and enjoy the views, have lunch, and look for wildlife. The barbecue corner at Playa Funchi now has two benches added, giving visitors a beautiful view of the bay.  Approximately ten new benches are placed at Boka Slagbaai, two of which are right at the edge of the salina so that visitors can sit for awhile as they observe the flamingos and other water birds foraging for food.  More benches are placed in shaded areas at Slagbaai.

Coincidentally, as STINAPA staff were photographing these improved picnic places, a rarely seen bird on Bonaire was spotted right on one of the trees providing shade for a picnic area.  The Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia) is a crisply striped bundle of black and white feathers. The beautiful bird creeps along tree trunks and branches, probing the bark for insects. They are migratory birds and this specimen was spotted in the park a few days ago, and is most likely passing through Bonaire from Venezuela, where it winters.  It is on its way to eastern United States to nest.  Keep your eyes open for this rarely seen bird and enjoy the new picnic areas around the park!

Another Youth of Bonaire Shines--Help Rianne Gietman of Cadushy Win Her Singing Competition

There’s many of Bonaire’s youths who shine in their chosen fields.  Most notable of recent times is Kiri Thode, the current world champion windsurfer in freestyle.  But there are always younger children that we must watch, as they progress in their fields of expertise.  One of these on-the-rise youths is Miss Rianne Gietman, of the Cadushy Distillery family, who is now a finalist in a song-writing competition.

Rianne wrote the lyrics to her own song, entitled, “Music Makes You Dream.” This song is about a very important topic these days, bullying in schools, and how young people can learn to believe in themselves.  The song can be heard sung by Rianne herself in a video clip by clicking here.  The music video shows Rianne in her home location around Bonaire.

Rianne is currently one of twelve top finalists, chosen from literally hundreds of entries, as the jury judged her song and presentation as one of the most beautiful songs entered in the Children for Children Competition, in the Netherlands.  For those who would like to help Rianne achieve this important milestone, voting can be done by going to www.MuzieklaatjeDromen.nl, which is also available in English, as well as Dutch.  The winning song gets on the 35th CD of Children for Children, and a special place in the musical “Waanzinnig Gedroomd” that will premiere in October of this year.

Rianne, we wish you good luck, and you’re a great ambassador for Bonaire!  (Source:  Cadushy Distillery)

Sebastian’s Restaurant has recently launched their new web site, which is available at http://bonaire.me/Zcfc.

Sebastian’s Restaurant has been open since September, 2013 in the oceanfront premises where Richard’s Restaurant was for many years.  Sebastian is continuing the tradition of fine dining in a magical ambiance.
